E.M. Etches is an English graduate and amateur novelist writing in the genres of epic fantasy and historical fiction. Their work is informed by their studies in the ancient world and medieval literature, and is inspired by forms of folklore. Viewing the fantastic as a gateway to boundary-crossing, their work aims to explore themes of reality and experience, gender and sexuality, and the self.
Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea is a much-beloved series that formed the basis of their second-year English dissertation. They are inspired by writers like Marlon James and Kazuo Ishiguro and wishes more people had heard of Hope Mirrlees’ Lud-In-The-Mist. They’re currently working their way through Robin Hobb’s Realm of The Elderlings. Please don’t ask them about this unless prepared to hear them talk at length about Fitz and the Fool’s relationship.
